Session 1: Building Coaching Capabilities: People Leaders as Coaches

People leaders support team members in their development, performance, and transitions. In this interactive session, we will explore the role of managers in coaching others, address some of the challenges managers face when coaching team members, and identify opportunities to develop people leaders to coach others. Participants will leave with tools they can use as managers to coach others. Professional coaches will leave with an understanding of how they can support managers in coaching team members.

Continuing Coach Education Units (CCE) units available for this program: 1.0 (0.75 Core Competencies, 0.25 Resource Development)

Meet Your Presenter: John Bennett, Ph.D.


John BennettJohn Bennett, Ph.D., PCC, BCC, is a business and behavioral science professor at the McColl School of Business, Queens University of Charlotte. He holds the Wayland H. Cato, Jr. Chair of Leadership. Dr. Bennett is the founding director of the university's graduate programs in coaching. He co-authored Coaching for Change (2014) and The Manager's Guide to Coaching for Change (2024). He has written numerous articles about coaching and co-edited two issues of the proceedings for the International Coaching Federation's (ICF) research symposium. Dr. Bennett was CEO of The Foundation for Coaching (a precursor to the Coaching Institute at Harvard). In addition to teaching and mentoring coaches, he has an active executive coaching practice. In addition, he has taught hundreds of graduate students and business leaders to use a coaching mindset and skills. Dr. Bennett was a founder of the Charlotte Area Chapter of ICF and served as president. He is a past president of the Graduate School Alliance for Educating Coaches. In 2010, he was named a Fellow of the Institute of Coaching and the Lewin Center. He earned an MPA from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and an MA and PhD in human and organizational systems from Fielding Graduate University.
